In France, the law requires all tenants to insure their home. You must provide an insurance certificate (attestation d'assurance) to your landlord as soon as you receive the keys. This protection is essential to cover you in the event of a claim or accident.

What does your home insurance in France cover?

There are two types of protection often combined into a single policy:

Civil Liability (Responsabilité Civile) : It is mandatory. It covers you if you cause damage to others (for example, a water leak that affects your neighbor's flat). It often includes legal assistance.

Comprehensive Home Insurance (Multirisque Habitation or MRH): It protects your own personal belongings (computer, furniture, clothing) against theft, fire, or water damage.

👉 In a shared flat (colocation): Check if your policy covers all residents. It is highly recommended that each roommate takes out their own insurance to ensure individual protection.

Where to take out your insurance?

The choice of your insurer depends on your status. Many offers are specifically tailored for low budgets.
