Reminder: labour law and rights for foreign students


European students can work in France, without a residence permit or work permit.
Non-European foreign students (except Algerian students) holding a “student” (« étudiant ») residence card or long-stay visa valid as a residence permit (VLS TS) may freely take a part-time professional job as a secondary activity during the period of their studies.
The number of hours worked in this part-time occupation is limited to 60% of the official full time working time, or 964 hours per year. The reference period for calculating the 964 hours is the validity period of the residence permit or long-stay visa valid as a residence permit.
To work, Algerian students must apply for a work permit, which allows them to work 50% of the legal workday duration, i.e. 822.50 hours per year.
Special cases (non-European students): • Self-employment (« auto-entreprenariat ») is prohibited. • A work permit may be required for certain trainings/alternances.
